Bright fireball on June 13th 2025

pathA bright fireball crossed the Jaén’s skies (South Spain) on June 13th at 02h29 UT.

The event was registered with the SMART Project’s detectors operated at Calar Alto (Almería), La Hita (Toledo), Sierra Nevada (Granada), La Sagra (Granada), Otura (Granada), Huelva and Seville.

Two of the external cameras of Calar Alto Observatory in Almería, also registered this nice object.

Following the preliminary analysis carried out by Professor José María Madiedo (Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía, IAA-CSIC), PI of the SMART Project, this object had a cometary origin. The rock detached from a comet, entered in our atmosphere at an initial speed of 87.000 km/h. The luminous part of the event started at an altitude of 106 km above Jaén province ground. The fireball moved then northeastward and finished at an altitude of 63 km.

Below are the videos from both the North SMART camera and the external cameras all located at Calar Alto Observatory in Almería.

Calar Alto (CAHA) fireball detection station, together with the one at the Observatory of Sierra Nevada (IAA-CSIC) and others placed at different locations in Spain, are part of the S.M.A.R.T. project led by Professor José María Madiedo (IAA) to track that kind of objects. Specifically, Calar Alto (CAHA) station and the one at Sierra Nevada (IAA-CSIC) constitute a collaboration agreement between the IAA researcher José María Madiedo and both institutions.
